Describing the performance of a gypsy singer near Algeciras in 1955, Laurie Lee noted the way in which his voice resembled 'a naked wail', 'an animal cry, thrown out, as it were, over burning rocks, a call half-lost in air but imperative and terrible'. Anti-aesthetic, no doubt, but full of raw and genuine passion.
